PROJECT
Grove Sandwiches
Sheung Wan
Location : Wing Lok Street, Sheung Wan
Size : 900 sqft
Team : Ronald Mau, Willis Lee, Lucy Youn, Ning Ting
The core objective of the Grove shop renovation project was to completely overhaul the store’s interior, which had suffered from years of wear and tear, and to transform it into a space that is simpler, brighter, and more modern — all within a limited budget.
Previously, the shop’s interior design felt dated and dim. Years of use had led to significant surface wear and fading, making it difficult for the brand to attract customers and failing to reflect the healthy, natural image that Grove stands for. The space was visually heavy and somewhat oppressive, lacking clarity and spatial depth.
Through our team’s comprehensive planning and execution, the store underwent significant improvements in the following areas:
-
Brand Visual Update
-
The shopfront signage was redesigned with a fresh new look. The “Grove” lettering and typography concept was retained but presented in a more contemporary, three-dimensional illuminated style, enhancing street-level visibility and brand recognition.
-
Although the “Grove” name itself did not change, the visual expression adopted modern fonts and colors — with vibrant orange lettering complemented by green leaf motifs — reinforcing the brand’s healthy and natural positioning.
-
-
Spatial Layers and Interior Refurbishment
-
The overall approach centered on refurbishment rather than a complete rebuild. Various finishes — including wood paneling, white brick walls, and textured stone-effect surfaces — were combined to create a modern, layered aesthetic, making the space feel more expansive and open.
-
Wooden strip elements and track lighting were added to the ceiling to enrich linear detailing, enhance spatial depth, and improve the flexibility and atmosphere of the lighting scheme.
-
Significant tropical botanical artworks were installed as wall features, introducing natural elements and contributing to the brand’s storytelling within the space.
-
-
Furniture and Fixture Upgrades
-
All dining furniture was replaced with new pieces. Light-colored marble-effect tabletops and soft grey upholstered chairs were chosen to balance comfort with modern design appeal, ensuring a more inviting dining experience.
-
The cashier counter was refurbished rather than completely rebuilt. A fresh surface treatment made it appear brand new while maintaining the original spatial configuration and operational flow — an approach that preserved budget without sacrificing visual impact.
-
The counter’s overall layout and functionality remained unchanged to ensure staff familiarity and operational efficiency.
-
-
Equipment and Technical Improvements
-
The store’s plumbing and electrical systems were comprehensively upgraded to ensure safety and support long-term operational stability.
-
While the kitchen’s core structure and equipment were kept intact primarily to minimize operational disruption, additional shelving was installed to improve storage efficiency and functionality.
-
A new automatic roller shutter system was installed, and the menu system was upgraded to digital displays, enhancing both operational convenience and customer experience.
-
-
Overall Impact and Business Benefits
-
Following the renovation, the color scheme emphasizes a clean, fresh, and bright ambiance, thereby eliminating the previously dark and oppressive atmosphere. The new environment is significantly more comfortable, encouraging customers to linger and dine in.
-
Given the store’s prime location in the bustling district of Sheung Wan, Hong Kong, the refreshed appearance helps attract the attention of passersby. It effectively supports the high foot traffic demands of both breakfast and lunchtime service periods.
-
This renovation project also serves as a model we aim to promote in the market, demonstrating how, even with limited budgets, creative design solutions and thoughtful refurbishments can deliver impactful upgrades for existing restaurants or F&B establishments, ultimately contributing to increased business performance.
-
Notably, although the cashier counter structure was retained, careful surface refinishing has achieved a result that looks virtually new. Furthermore, the addition of botanical artworks and decorative plant motifs enriches the space, reinforcing the natural and healthy image central to the Grove brand.
In summary, this project exemplifies our practical design philosophy of achieving “maximum impact on a limited budget.” It demonstrates that even without undertaking large-scale demolitions or complete reconstructions, it is possible — through creative design, meticulous detailing, and professional execution — to inject new life into a commercial space.
